Criminal Minds Reid Dork  (satinlie)
So in light of the Criminal Minds spin-off news, I have a great idea for a low-budget CM spin-off. We can call it Criminal Minds: Quantico, and it will take place entirely in the FBI's Quantico facilities:

  • 37% Penelope Garcia at her computer while the BAU team jets around the country (CM cast can guest star weekly on her computer screen)

  • 12% clerks of the week standing around the water cooler talking office developments and politics

  • 24% character building scenes in the Quantico cafeteria (there has to be one right?) complete with jokes over the food

  • 3% X-Files gags whenever anyone has to go down to the filing room in the basement

  • 7% characters discussing cases outside while the cadets run around the campus on training jogs

  • 4% background discussions of the socio-political situation both in the US and internationally

  • 11% use of Spencer Reid dropping in on other departments during his lunch break and actually being seen as a valuable asset by 99% of FBI agents (instead of the boring trope of mocking the slightly eccentric genius and disregarding their insight i hate that trope)

  • 2% dinosaurs

Daily December: Days 3-6 (yeah I'm behind)

Flower (tea_rose)
K so I'm having to move stuff around in the master post - I'll get to my submitted Qs after this weekend

Favourite hobbies?

Primarily writing fiction (as evidenced by this blog) and I'm huge fan of cooking I like to experiment with recipes, but not so good at baking (no patience). I'm pants at the visual arts (like drawing or crafting seriously I suck).

Any fictional genres you don't like?

I never have been able to get into zombies. There's something about the lack of any chance of a positive ending for the world... I just can't get into it. Also, and this ties into the next one, zombie stuff is usually such gore porn. I can't stand things that are (needlessly) graphically violent. That's probably why I have never been able to get into Game of Thrones.

One thing you wish you could have:

A cat.  I'm very allergic to cats (they totally aggravate my asthma and if I'm not on allergy meds I can get into trouble) which sucks because I love cats and want four. I have to stick with looking at kitties on the internet.

Hey look i even have three tags on tumblr about cats
http://mhalachai.tumblr.com/tagged/kitten
man i need to tidy that up

What are your current TV shows?

I'm currently watching Forever and NCIS New Orleans both of which I don't know why but hey. The thing about Forever is I keep loling at the dad from Numbers playing Reed Richard's son, it's lovely. And it's not a bad show, just derivative. Good acting on the mediocre scripts.

NCIS New Orleans - at least they stopped forcing Scott Bakula to talk with that ridiculous accent. And I'll watch CCH Pounder in anything.

Am still watching Once Upon A Time although again don't know why - that horrible ending to the Snow Queen arc last week just made me rage at my tv. You can't have all these good actors in an ensemble like this and throw such shoddy plots and downright bad writing at them. Seriously I will write your show for free just stop it.

And when I get super angry at TV i go back to Netflix.

What TV shows are you guys watching this year? This entry was originally posted at http://mhalachai.dreamwidth.org/323634.html. There are currently comment count unavailable comments.

Hey so if anyone wants a Christmas/Holiday card in the mail, let me know your address so I can send you one! LJ message system works (http://www.livejournal.com/inbox/compose.bml?) or email me at mhalachai at gmail.com.

Days 1 and 2 of the December meme

Flower (tea_rose)
(I expect I may have to double up several times this month as my day gets away from me)

December meme master post

Day 1: What are you watching on Netflix these days?

I can't help myself; I've been watching season after season of Murder, She Wrote. It's such a fascinating show; the mysteries are surprisingly innovative  and un-repetitive for a show that ran 12 seasons. I think that what made the show work so well was that there was no attempt to have there be any kind of story arc lasting longer than a 2-parter, and even the cast of supporting characters in Cabot Cove was really only there to facilitate Jessica Fletcher's presence at murder scenes.

The show underwent a bit of a change in season 8, when the exec team changed (to include J. Michael Straczynski yes that one) and moved Jessica to New York. That's a good place to start with the show in full swing.

Plus it's fun to play "how many times has this actor guest-starred as different characters?" For example, Kate Mulgrew (as in Captain Kathryn Janeway) played three characters and was perfect three times over :)

If you have a chance and can get American Netflix and need a good mystery show (that doesn't require a lot of mental energy) check out Murder, She Wrote.

And if you don't get American Netflix, you can check out the Hola browser plugin (https://hola.org/) seriously it's great. It's a VPN client that connects you with servers for your favorite media sites and you can use your regular Netflix account login.

I'm also watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries which I saw gifsets for on Tumblr and yeah it's just an amazing show.

Day 2: first fandom(s)

If we're talking first media that sparked my little fangirl brain about incorporating my own stories into the fictional world, that would be the Little House on the Prairie books when I was five (best to not ask). If we're talking engaging in the fandom world, it would be Profiler and Pretender (NBC, starting in 1996) - the network started a real robust (for the time) website for each show and set loose a community manager to engage the fandom over the summer break, and I just took to it like a fish to water (I went by Zarah back then).

If we're talking fic, I dabbled in Stargate SG-1 but started writing under Mhalachai in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom in 2004 (stories at http://www.tthfanfic.org/Author-3308/Mhalachai.htm).

Change of focus for December

Flower (tea_rose)
With everything that's upcoming this month I'm making the decision to go on a tiny writing hiatus for three weeks. I have a lot of work to wrap up before the holidays, and a final project for a course I'm taking, so yeah that's where my time needs to go :( Then I'm going to have two weeks off over Christmas so I can get back to creative works.

That said I'm going to be doing the December meme and I plan to fill in those blanks myself which is easy, I can talk about things that interest me for 150 words per day.

Also I have a paid account now so I can import all my icons again yay. This entry was originally posted at http://mhalachai.dreamwidth.org/322948.html. There are currently comment count unavailable comments.

where's my black widow television show

Flower (tea_rose)
(posted on tumblr yesterday)

okay so we're not getting a Black Widow movie in the foreseeable future. I have a great way for Marvel to save face on that decision and still give us Natasha Romanoff's story:

A Black Widow television show

image

(this is the face of a woman you want on your TV)

None of this eight episodes of Agent Carter miniseries stuff - give me a 26-episode Black Widow arc, 45-minutes every Tuesday of Natasha Romanoff's life trying to find herself in the wake of the SHIELD/HYDRA disaster, helping to avenge those in need, trying to find out who she is, while simultaneously trying to find out where she came from, in the snowy ruins of her childhood.

Give me tiny Natasha in the Red Room.

image

Give me the Black Widow burning her way across the globe.

image

Give me how Clint brought Natasha into SHIELD. Give me what happened in Budapest Hell, give me a low-budget ep where Natasha spends the entire hour in a safe house in yoga pants and a t-shirt, on the phone with Clint (Jeremy Renner guest starts in voice-over) to disarm a bomb or take down a target or something.

image

If Marvel and Disney are willing to give Agents of Shield a series of running chances, they can pony up for one season on Black Widow.

( I don't know what Scarlett Johansson's stance on television is, but at least someone should ask her).

I've even got a great place for it - post Age of Ultron, Pre Cap3. Nathan Edmonson (nathanedmondson ) already penned the first 6 pages for Black Widow movie, there's your pilot scene right there. Mavel can do this, whip up excitement for Cap 3, for Captain Marvel, and dare I say even AntMan? Make the MCU even bigger than it is now, make it wider. Make people care.

anyway tl'dr: I don't want 2 hours of Black Widow, I want 26 hours. With her back story and absolute centrality to the recent MCU movies, is that so much to ask? This entry was originally posted at http://mhalachai.dreamwidth.org/322491.html. There are currently comment count unavailable comments.
Flower (tea_rose)
but how about an Avengers' Night Court AU?
  • Judge Steve Rogers, a pragmatic yet not-entirely conventional judge who cares more about the people than the harshest application of the law. Has a background in (it's rumoured) show business and the military.
  • Prosecutor Tony Stark, whose flashy suits are second only to his eccentric personality
  • Public Defender James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, whose all-business demeanor doesn't quite hide his kind character. Tony and Rhody went to law school together and are BFFs outside the courtroom.
  • Bailiffs Natasha Romanoff and Thor Odinson. Thor has been known to flex his biceps to get defendants to fall in line. Of the two, Natasha is much more efficient.
  • Court Clerk Clint Barton, who was once on the USA Olympic team for archery, but now clerks as his 'night job' while also managing a run-down apartment building with a set of wacky tenants (who occasionally drop by). Tries to sneak his dog Lucky into the courtroom, claiming that Lucky is a “hearing-ear” service dog (Steve looks the other way). Lucky occasionally steals pizza from Tony's plate during the evening meal break.
  • Veterans' Advocate Sam Wilson, who is an occasional guest star when former military personnel before the courts request his services. Through the course of the first season, Sam and Steve become running partners.
  • Cafeteria manager Bruce Banner, who started in the cafeteria years before as community service for various anger-related issues. Stays on because he likes the place. Tony and Bruce are good friends.
  • James “Bucky” Barnes, who doesn't seem to have a job but hangs around all night in the Judge's chambers, acting as sounding board for Steve. We find out in season two that Bucky and Steve used to be involved (and that the reason Steve left the military was DADT). Recurring love interest for Steve.
  • And lastly, Nick Fury, the retired Night Court judge who drops in now and again to sit in the front row of the court and heckle silently with the raising of his eyebrows. Has a tendency to bring Twizzlers.
(I posted this on Tumblr yesterday but wanted to share it here too :)

10 fic recs (multi-fandoms)

Flower (tea_rose)
So I was tagged on Tumblr to post ten fics that have stayed with me in some way, and I thought that you guys might like the blast from the past too - enjoy :)

In no particular order:

Retrograde (SGA/SG1) by Martha Wilson: http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/seriesindex.htm

Retrograde is an epic look at SGA if they'd done nearly everything different in the first season, and then Earth came looking for the expedition. What I love about this story is that by making those changes to the first season (basically using common sense), the world building is so much better, and the characters feel true to themselves.

Blood Magic (Harry Potter) by GatewayGirl: http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/gatewaygirl/BM.html

One of the “If Harry was Snape's son” stories, and it tackles that subject matter in a really good way that keeps to the characterizations. What I love about this story is that Snape isn't some misunderstood white knight, he really is an asshole and we get to see how he grows during the course of the story. Also, Harry is written as a teenage boy who's a bit of an asshole at times and self-centred and just trying to so hard, and it is just a great Harry.

Shades of Ianto (Torchwood) by Sarcasticchick: http://archiveofourown.org/series/13812

This is just an epic take on Ianto Jones, with a rich backstory for him and I highly recommended reading it. It really influenced my view on that character and a lot of Torchwood itself.

Only the Journey Matters (SGA) by GA Unicorn: http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=14549

This is one of those fun shorts, where a non-canon character is used to explore a canon character's characterization. Basically, how the military folk on SGA see Colonel Sheppard. What I love about this story is that it looks at how the military personnel might approach life on Atlantis under the uncommon command structure.

Shovelling (MASH/BtVS) by PABurke: http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-7661/PaBurke+Shoveling.htm

A collection of 100 drabbles (100 word each) where Dr. Hawkeye Pierce ends up living next to the Slayer house in Cleveland. What I love about this story is that it gets into your heart and makes you care in 100x100 words. I still cry when I read it. Character death.

Bridges (Stargate/BtVS) by Tassos: http://www.tthfanfic.org/story.php?no=3138

Jack O'Neill is Xander Harris's real father. Bridges is a long and involved telling of trust and dealing and grief and just making it in the world. Even if that world has aliens and demons. What I love about this story is that it made me care about Xander in a way the show failed to do. Great Xander.

Fire and the Rose (Harry Potter) by Abby and Domina http://www.witchfics.org/fr/

This is the ultimate HP body-swap fic for me - Snape and Hermione swap bodies and have to spend Hermione's seventh year living as the other. It's Hermione/Snape but it makes it work, somehow. What I love about this story is that it's long and involved and a great look at body-swap.

Ain't Seen the Sunshine (Sherlock) by Emungere: http://archiveofourown.org/works/179127?view_adult=true

You guys know I like kidfic. In this one, John Watson is brought on as the nanny for Sherlock Holmes (age 5) and Mycroft Holmes (age 12). It's a retelling of the Hound of the Baskervilles (the story not the show) and features Greg Lestrade. It's pre Watson/Lestrade and is wonderful. What I love about this story, besides the writing of actual!five-year-old-Sherlock, is the associated blog the writer's been keeping up: http://boringlifeofjohnwatson.blogspot.ca/

Never Leave a Trace (White Collar) by Copperbadge: http://archiveofourown.org/works/757143/chapters/1415554

Sam got me into White Collar through his fic, but Never Leave a Trace is in a category all of its own when it comes to fic. A story about jailhouse magic and what life is like on the inside, Sam ended up turning this into a stand-alone original novel. Even if you don't know White Collar, I recommend this fic to everyone everywhere to see how magical realism can be woven through a fic. What I love about this story is the magical realism spin on things.

The Lodger (Harry Potter) by Mad Martha: http://archiveofourown.org/works/218544/chapters/328702

Ending with an HP fic, this one is based on the premise that one day, years after Voldemort, Harry Potter places an ad for a lodger (aka roommate) and Draco Malfoy turns up on his doorstep. What I love about this story is that it looks at lie after Voldemort in an unrelenting way - his death didn't magically fix everything. Turns into Harry/Draco.

Anyone have any recs for me? :D :D This entry was originally posted at http://mhalachai.dreamwidth.org/321148.html. There are currently comment count unavailable comments.

Hiding Girl (maesstria)
So anyway here's a random outtake from Hands of Clay where the Barnes' and Rogers' head to the zoo on Mother's Day (which is right around the corner in this story) anyway I was struck with inspiration today after finishing the next two chapters in this story (next chapter on Thursday). This is just messing around.

I figure that they picked up that Sunday and went to the zoo because why not, it wasn’t raining and maybe they’d go for ice cream afterwards (Geeze, Steve, why not just take them to Disneyland while you’re at it) (because I have a meeting tomorrow, but there’s always Father’s Day for that) (oh god shut up before they hear you).

So they went to the zoo, and Natasha simply loved the red pandas and Clint wanted to spend the rest of his life feeding the alpacas and sheep in the barnyard, and James very nearly tricked Steve into milking one of the cows. After a couple of hours, even Clint started sagging and Steve made the executive decision that it was ice cream time, only first they had to do the bathroom thing.

Clint went with Steve into the men’s room, while Natasha got a pep talk and directions to not dawdle, then she headed into the women’s washroom while James waited outside for her in as non-creeperish a way as he could.

(Daddy, I am five years old. I am a big girl! She had said indignantly the week before at the library. I can go to the bathroom by myself. And so James had let her, hovering nervously by the drinking fountain until Natasha came back out again, triumphant and smug about how very capable and adult she was and then James ended up carrying her home because it was raining and she didn’t want her shoes to get wet.)

Steve and Clint reappeared, then Natasha came out (yes I washed my hands. Yes, I used soap. Daddy, honestly!) Then it was James’ turn, and so he didn’t get to witness what Steve later would call "the teachable moment from hell."

rest behind the cutCollapse )

Brooklyn Boys (an Old Soldier's outtake)

bucky 1
tl;dr - too much time on my hands this weekend. Have an outtake from Old Soldiers (post chapter 11). PS this series is canon-divergent from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Also on AO3)

Summary: James “Bucky” Barnes still isn't sure how this whole friendship thing is supposed to work out, not when his best friend and his best girl aren't exactly seeing eye to eye.

Alternate title care of Natasha, “Me and you and your friend Steve”.

"You're smiling."

"A trick of the light." James slid his hand under the blanket, Natalia's skin soft to his touch. "Maybe you should get your eyes checked."

"My eyesight is perfect," Natalia informed him. She pushed him down and crawled on top of him, warm and solid, so soon after waking. "What are you thinking about?"

"This and that," James said as he ran his fingers through her hair. Truth be told, he had a lot of things on his mind. In two days, he was heading back to Colorado Springs and the tender care of the U.S. Air Force. He didn't know what was in store for him there, not what a one-armed man might be able to do in the military nor what they might want from a man who had once been the Winter Soldier.

Summary: Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. What is left when everything you have, everything you remember, is stripped away? Sgt. James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, the Winter Soldier, is about to find out how impossible it is to pick up those pieces.

Rating: Mature for violence, trauma, sexual content
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers, etc

In chapter 11, a lot happens - most notably there is more interaction between Steve and Bucky, and Bucky and Natasha too. And there’s an interesting wrench thrown into the works for everyone’s future happiness too :/

!Haley Atwell/Peggy Carter

Summary: For decades, Peggy Carter has had only two constants in her life: Howard Stark, and the Winter Soldier.

Chapter 11: Pop quiz: this chapter contains cameos by:
  1. Tony Stark;
  2. Pepper Potts;
  3. Maria Hill;
  4. The Winter Soldier; or
  5. All of the above
Also ps content advisory for a child in peril.

For those of you who are new to this story, Rhapsody in Blue is my “what-if” on Peggy Carter’s life after the end of the War. Obviously canon-divergent now, and non-compliant with CA:TWS (especially their take on the Winter Soldier, I’m going more in the direction of his characterization in the comics), it’s a way for me to write about Peggy, whom I adore. So I had this idea for a post CA:TWS story where the Winter Soldier/Bucky is stalking Natasha while she's on her "finding myself" tour but does nothing violent just following til one day she turns on him and is all like "either try to shoot me or fuck right on off".

Then he asks her why she isn't helping him, like she's done before.

Since the only time Natasha has laid eyes on the Winter Soldier was when he shot her in the gut, she kicks him in the face and takes off.

One month later, he's perched on a fencepost on a deserted road outside Belgrade when she's done dismantling an old Hydra installation single-handed (Clint offered to help but he's still knitting broken ribs from his cover breaking after the Triskelion) and this time he's a bit more talkative (as in, nearly three full sentences) and says that her name is Natalia and she was a dancer and he's known her for as long as he's had his metal arm.

(Her name is Natalia and her trainers did have her take ballet training, along with gymnastics and martial art, but she is literally twenty-eight years old and does not know him. She tells him that).

And then he says, "You say that every time."

~~~
It's a old and buried Hydra facility, deep in the Russian tundra, where he find their answers.
Video and audio recordings of the Black Widow program, only instead of what Natasha thought she knew, of the small cohort of children her age being brought under the Red Room's wing after the fall of the Soviet Union, this program stretches back since before the Second World War.
Natasha watches as countless little girls are led into a chamber, are strapped down and subjected to the painful procedure of memory implantation. Not all of them survive the procedure.
The girls are identical. Only the dates change.
The Winter Soldier changes the tape one last time, and this one kicks Natasha's feet out from under her; she's walked that path before, can still feel the straps holding her down.
The girl on the screen is her, only weeks after she was taken from the people who claimed to be her parents (always, always, they had looked at her like she was a stranger).
She remembers the pain. She remembers becoming the Black Widow.
Across the room, the Winter Soldier coughs. "That’s how I knew your name is Natalia."
His words ring in Natasha's ears as she stares at the photograph, date-stamped 1941, a hollow-cheeked woman staring with dead eyes at the camera. Romanova, Natalia Alianovna.
Black Widow Project: Specimen Alpha.
Natasha is staring at a photograph of herself.
"Your name is always Natalia."
In going through my old files...
WC Neal Caffrey (triniroslin15)
So backstory - I created my Dreamwidth account back in 2010 and then forgot to cross-post so I had to hand-import the last 4 years. Not actually that much work.
In any event, while going through the archives I found this snippet of a White Collar/Anita Blake crossover I started back in July, 2011. I'm never going to finish it but wanted to share it with you as it's still rather fun.
(Written before that weird Nazi art heist thing on WC)
!Haley Atwell/Peggy Carter
Summary: For decades, Peggy Carter has had only two constants in her life: Howard Stark, and the Winter Soldier.
Chapter 9: Peggy deals with the fallout of the Winter Soldier attack in Paris.
Chapter 10: After years of silence, the Winter Soldier is back.
Note: Chapter 10 has a warning on it that you should read before you proceed. It’s in the chapter notes at the top.
For those of you who are new to this story, Rhapsody in Blue is my “what-if” on Peggy Carter’s life after the end of the War. Obviously canon-divergent now, and non-compliant with CA:TWS (especially their take on the Winter Soldier, I’m going more in the direction of his characterization in the comics), it’s a way for me to write about Peggy, whom I adore.
A week's vacation
SGA Shep coffee (casett)
I'm on a week's vacation from work, which came at just the right time - I was getting to that point where everything and everyone annoyed me. (not for any big reasons, just all the small things) so now I get a week to relax and not have to deal with work.
I've done a bit of writing so far and will probably go see a few movies this week (or maybe one certain movie three times)
I do have a few things to check off my list, namely an interview reference check from last summer's student worker, but that will be wrapped up today leaving me plenty of time to get back to my week of not doing anything. Except writing :)
